A Day in the Life of My Successful 100-Pound Weight Loss Journey

What I Do: Food, Supplements, Exercises, & Habits!

By Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

Often I get recognized as the guy in INSANITY DVDs that Shaun T says has ‘the good squats’. But not everyone knows that I grew up as a heavy kid. Back then childhood obesity didn’t run rampant like it does today. So being overweight growing up usually meant I was THE fat kid in class.

I will be forever grateful to those that supported and encouraged me along they way, even when I wasn’t ready to take any action steps to actually change. It literally came out of a very emotional break up in college with my first serious girlfriend. I was at my heaviest, with no real direction or confidence, looking at myself in the mirror asking “Who is going to Love this!?”

Have you ever had that moment, where you say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”? That was that moment for me. Something in my brain clicked. I knew I had to stop blaming others for my situation and I had to change. I started simple: riding my bike and running around my neighborhood. It wasn’t much, but by me taking an ACTION step I opened myself up to other possibilities that would present themselves in the near future.

I know without that decision to change, and the commitment to start moving I wouldn’t have been open to trying a beginner program like Power 90 when I had it referred to me by a friend.

During my 100-pound weight loss journey there were many ups and downs. I had days I didn’t want to workout. Days I fell off the wagon. And lots of mental hurdles to overcome. Thank God for the support community around me, or I never would have been able to stick it out and be where I am today.

Along the way there were lots of changes, but they didn’t all happen overnight at once. I still remember the first time I made conscious effort to make a ‘healthier’ food choice. I frequented many a fast-food drive thru because I THOUGHT I was saving time and money. (Boy was I wrong) But I remember one particular visit. Instead of ordering my regular #2 combo meal, I decided to get two chicken sandwiches, no mayo, no fries and a diet soda.

Now 10 years later, this isn’t a meal you would see me ordering. But at the time it was a HUGE step for me. The most powerful thing to come from that decision was the fact that I did notice some small changes in my body after a couple of weeks! So naturally I thought, “If that little change produced these results, what else can I change to get even more?” I was so excited to see progress that I was more than willing to reexamine my routine to see where else I could make improvements.

I tell you this story, because as I share with you my current routine I want you to understand that what you are about to see was a accumulation of a lot of little decisions that ultimately became ‘normal’ to me. So if you look at what I do now and think, “I could never do that”, I would have thought the same thing at the beginning of my weight loss journey! But I do want to share a sample day for me so you know what it is I do.

Right now I am prepping to go on a vacation to the Bahamas. It is the annual Beachbody Coach trip! So of course I want to look my best. This is what I call my GET RESULTS kind of day.

5 a.m – I am up with a little caffeine in my system (usually in the form of green tea). And doing some kind of low impact cardio for about 30 minutes to get my metabolism moving. (Walk, Jog, Jump Rope, Elliptical) This is also a great way to set my mindset and intention for the day. I choose to listen to some kind of positive personal development audio so I am feeding my brain and body 1st thing in the morning.

6 a.m. - My first meal of the day- EVERY DAY- is my Shakeology. I’m not a nutritionist, a personal trainer, or a doctor so I can’t give you all the technical details of what makes Shakeology so amazing. All I know is it replaced SEVEN different supplements I used to spend money on. It eliminated my craving for diet soda (I used to drink 7-8 a day!). I stopped losing my hair, and my ‘digestion’ issues have gone away. Not to mention my cousin lost 30 pounds. My Dad reduced his heart medication. My step Mom improved her energy. And my wife bounced back to her pre-pregnancy weight in record time. All from using Shakeology! It’s a non-negotiable supplement for me and my family!

7:30 a.m. – Breakfast usually consists of 2/3 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of egg whites, and some kind of healthy fat: avocado, flax oil, or coconut oil

10:00 a.m. – Mid Morning Meal – is a lean protein, healthy starch, and good fat. Sample: 6-8oz of chicken breast, 6oz of steamed yams, 2oz of avocado slices with mustard. This is the meal, I also take my Slimming Formula, Core Cal-Mag, Omega 3’s. This is usually my meal before my main workout of the day!

11:30 a.m. – As I get ready for my noon workout, I take my pre-workout supplement. I just started using Beachbody’s Energy and Endurance pre-workout formula. I love it! Energy Boost with no jittery side effects!

Noon – I do my main workout of the day. Right now I am following the P90X2 routine!

1 p.m. – I make sure to make the most of my workout and push myself as hard as I can to earn my post workout Results and Recovery Formula. It tastes like an Orange Push Pop. I think I’m addicted to it!

2 p.m. – I have another lean protein, good carb, healthy fat meal similar to my 10 am meal.

4:30 p.m. - This is the point in the day where I start to taper my carbs because I am less active at night. So this is usually a lean protein over a bed of raw spinach with Olive Oil or Coconut Oil.

7 p.m. – Dinner is usually a white fish like tilapia and a green vegetable like green beans, asparagus, or broccoli.

9 p.m. – Right before bed I want some kind of protein in my system to help my muscles as I sleep. Lately this has been in the form of Egg Whites & Almond Butter. Actually pretty good!

As you can see, I go to bed pretty early! This wasn’t always the case. I used to be quite the night owl! But you CAN change your body clock IF it is important enough to you. So turn off the late night TV, grab a good book, or spend time with your family!

So there it is boys and girls. That is a basic day for me. And most days look exactly the same. I used to think I hated routine, and considered something like that very boring. Now I take comfort in my routine. It keeps me on track in all the other areas of my life as well! With Family, Business, Relationships, and Spiritually.

If you have additional questions I invite you to leave a comment here on the blog. I would be happy to help you on your weight loss journey!

When Opportunity Knocks… Will You Be Ready?

By Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

I have always been one of the most avid sports fans I know. From a very young age, I loved the drama of a buzzer beater or a last second Hail Mary to win a game! Athletes were larger-than-life figures who allowed me to play out my sports fantasies in my front yard pretending to be Troy Aikman, Michael Jordan or Nolan Ryan.

I have also always been fascinated with the story of the under dog. The player the ‘experts’ said didn’t quite have the size, speed or athleticism to play in the big leagues, yet overcame the odds to shine their brightest on the biggest stage.

The history of sports is covered with them. Names like Rudy, Doug Flutie, Spud Webb, Kurt Warner, and now the latest sensation… Jeremy Lin!

For those of you who don’t get your daily dose of ESPN or Sports Center, Jeremy Lin has taken New York City, Madison Square Garden and the NBA by storm. This little known point guard from Harvard has bounced around the NBA from team to team, sitting on the bench, reduced to playing for lesser teams in the developmental league. That was until a couple of weeks ago when, due to another player’s injury, Lin got his opportunity to shine on the biggest stage, playing for the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden.

Will you be ready when opportunity knocks at your door? Jeremy Lin was…

Prior to this game, Lin only played 55 minutes of the Knicks first 23 games. But that didn’t keep him from seizing the moment when opportunity knocked. On February 4th, Lin had 25 points, five rebounds, and seven assists—all career-highs—in a 99–92 Knicks victory over the New Jersey Nets.

This sparked a five game winning streak for what had been a struggling Knicks team. In that stretch, Lin became first player in NBA history with 20 points and at least seven assists in his first four starts. Then last night, Lin capped a win over the Toronto Raptors with a 3-point bucket with less than one second remaining in a game! He surpassed Shaquille O’Neal’s league record for the most points in his first five games as a starter!

Stories like this really touch my heart. They are a great reminder that you might be struggling in your current day to day. You may feel like you deserve better than how you are currently living. Maybe you were passed over for a job that you were the most qualified candidate. Or you find yourself picking up the pieces of a nasty divorce after you took a life long vow of love and devotion. I don’t know your specific situation, but I do know it is easy to feel sorry for ourselves, blame others for our struggle, and think that life’s not fair.

I’m sure Jeremy Lin felt that way at times as he sat on the bench watching other players. He wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school to play at a big name basketball school when he knew he had the skills to not only play in college, but to go on to be an NBA Star. I’m sure that stung as well.

I know there were many times in my life I felt like I was dealt an unfair hand. Why did I have to be the fat kid growing up? I can’t afford to go to a gym; it’s not my fault I’m 100 pounds overweight! Why did I drop out of college three times due to lack of money when other kids with lesser work ethics got all their education paid for? Would my life be different if I didn’t grow up in a family with multiple divorces? Who is going to love me looking like this?

I look back on my struggles now and, oddly, I am very thankful for them. Without experiencing the frustration, I wouldn’t be the man I am today. We truly are molded by the adversity in our lives. The same trials, frustrations, and setbacks happen to us all.

It’s not what happens to you that define who you are or who you’ll become, it’s what you do in the face of adversity that shows your true character.

Jeremy Lin chose not to let his circumstances define who he knew he was. Even when others said that he wasn’t talented enough to play professional basketball, he continued to work on himself, his mindset, and his skills so when the opportunity presented itself he was ready.

"I've surrendered that to God. I'm not in a battle with what everybody else thinks anymore," Jeremy Lin.

I challenge you to not dwell on your current situation. It may seem bleak. It might be worse than anything or anyone else could imagine. But what seems like a negative to you could very well be used to bless someone else. I would not be as effective as a Coach, helping others reach their weight loss and fitness goals, had I not had to battle my own demons first.

I could have just blamed outside circumstances for my physical health. But I chose to take action and put more energy into improving myself instead of blaming others. I didn’t wait for some magic lightening bolt of motivation to come zap me off my couch. Because of that, God has more than matched my effort and blessed me to impact others lives through health and fitness.

The current chapter in your life is NOT how the story has to end! And guess what? You don’t have to do it alone. I am more than happy to partner with you! I want you to learn from my mistakes so your success rate is faster and greater than anything I have ever done. I believe in you. The question is: Do YOU believe in YOU enough to take the first step?

Discover The One Thing Keeping You From Reaching Your Weight Loss, Health and Fitness Goals

By Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

Do you have skin in the game? Many of us find lots of variables that keep us from reaching our weight loss, health and fitness goals! I should know. I have lost 100 pounds and been able to keep it off for over 10 years. But there were definitely obstacles and stumbling blocks along the way! I have made it my life’s mission to help YOU achieve your goals.

Not just a quick, temporary 5-10 pounds that you take off for an event or a season only to gain it back plus an extra 10. We have all been there. Post holidays, before a wedding or upcoming family event where we torture ourselves with some unsustainable diet or routine. It makes us grouchy, irritable, and miserable to be around – all in hopes to impress some people we haven’t seen in years. Right now is a perfect example of that. Bathing suit season is right around the corner, and the “I need to lose this holiday weight” panic is starting to set in.

Instead of jumping into a panic routine that will only yield temporary results, what if you could partner with someone who has had long term success and is willing to show you how to have the same, so this is the last swimsuit season you ever have to stress about!

I’m looking for people who want long-term success. I am willing to share everything I know with those that are serious about changing their lifestyle. For most people, there is usually ONE simple thing that keeps them from turning temporary results into real life long change. There are lots of variables to distract us out there. Some try to starve themselves to results with some kind of cabbage cleanse or gimmicky diet. Yes, they may see some initial results. But the routine is impossible to keep up consistently, and eventually they find themselves right back where they started (and then some!). Discouraged and frustrated they just quit trying to do anything and are reduced to feeling hopeless.

Others start a program that’s either been given to them or something they made up themselves. Maybe it’s a new running routine. Or they joined a gym in the New Years Resolution excitement. Excited about their initial results, they continue to just do the same thing over and over only to find their body plateaus. They stop seeing results, grow frustrated, and quit.

Then there is a third group that had their momentum squashed by outside forces…aka ‘LIFE’. These include: getting sick, work schedule, injury, kids’ schedules, or lack of support at home!

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

Well guess what? All the unpredictable things in our world are not going to stop just so you can lose that 20 pounds before swimsuit season. It is so easy to fall into the trap of “I’m going to restart when…” or “I’ll get serious about my health and fitness after….”

Life is not going to stop. It is going to keep coming. The only thing that can change now is YOU. When I was 100 pounds overweight, in debt, living with my parents in my mid 20’s I had plenty of excuses on why it wasn’t convenient for me to start. Did someone offer to do it for me? Absolutely NOT! I found some amazing support along the way. But ultimately it was something I had to DO!

That brings me back to my topic. What I wanted to share with you today. The ONE thing keeping most people from seeing real sustainable results is:

Skin In the Game

What do I mean by that? Skin in the game? I’m talking about an investment. An investment into a program, into a support community, into an expert that has been where you are, seen success, and been able to maintain that success for over a decade!

“Your Level of Success in Life is directly proportional to how much Skin you have in the Game!”

I do it in my everyday life. I constantly invest into those that know more than I do, and it has made all the difference in the world. In my health, my fitness, as a business owner, husband, father, I constantly invest my time, money, and effort to learn from those that have achieved the level of success I want to achieve.

Think of it this way: if your goal was to be a doctor, you would need to take out ridiculous loans in order to learn from other doctors on how to have success. And why were you willing to take out those loans, go into huge amounts of debt to attend medical school? Because there was a promise of a very lucrative career helping others by doing that.

But you would have to invest first! You would need to put skin in the game first to show the medical community that you were serious about reaching your goal of being a doctor. Right?

Well as a Coach, I have the exact same priorities! Honestly, if it were up to me, I would give programs, products, and my time away for free just to see lives blessed in the same way that mine has been. But I know, as I grew up as a fat kid, people tried to help me by giving me free programs or products. And I never stuck with any of them because I didn’t have any skin in the game. I had zero investment into my own success. It was TOO easy for me to quit. And no matter how much my friends or family loved me and were concerned for my health, they couldn’t do it for me.

I see this all the time with people trying to cut corners to find the cheapest weight loss gimmick or supplement. Or perhaps they got an illegal copy of a program like P90X or INSANITY. Another example of ‘No Skin in the Game’. They take this cheap low quality supplement a few times or kind of do a few workouts. Then they don’t see immediate results. And it’s easy to quit, because they really didn’t have anything invested in the first place.

But what if honestly seeing long term results could effect your profession, your marriage, your income, your relationships? Guess what? It can. All of those things have been drastically improved in my life because I stepped up, made an investment in the midst of my excuses, and put some skin in the game!

So if you have big goals, big dreams, and that tiny voice in your gut saying “I know there is more to me than I am currently living." And you are ready to step up, invest in yourself, and partner with an expert that isn’t going to give you theories, or possible solutions, but real strategies that have worked in my life, then I want to work with you!

Do you find yourself saying:

I want to look like I did in high school.

I want to tap into the inner athlete that still lives in me!

I want to kickoff this baby weight, and look sexy for my spouse.

If I could drop a few pounds I would have more energy to play and enjoy my kids.

If my old jeans could fit again, I would have the confidence to pursue my dream career instead of being stuck in this job I hate.

My mission in life is YOUR success story. I want to teach you what I have done, so that you may reap the benefits of what I have learned. So you don’t make any of the mistakes I made along the way.

I didn’t do it alone. And you don’t have to do it alone either!

This is my invitation to you! I want to partner with you. I have been extremely blessed to have experienced success in my life. To lose 100 pounds, gain confidence to start my own business, be featured in Shaun T’s INSANITY DVDs. And there is no reason you can’t enjoy amazing blessings as well!

But I need to know you are serious. I will match my effort with yours! You take a step. I will take two. Is that you? Are you ready to get started? Then I invite you to fill out the form below, and I will contact you to learn about your goals, and the best way to achieve those!

Pick My Brain – You Have Weight Loss Questions, I Have Answers

by Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

Very few things in life are super duper consistent; however, I have noticed something lately that always makes me laugh to myself. As a business owner and a work at home Dad with a flexible schedule, I find myself running most of my errands during the day. (Which is awesome; very little traffic and never crowds to battle- especially at the grocery store!)

More often than not, I am wearing some sort of Beachbody gear while running my errands. A P90X jacket, INSANITY t-shirt, or just carrying my Team Beachbody Elite Coach backpack around. It’s amazing how these things become not only a conversation starter, but at times its like

they are a green light for people to approach me and open up their souls!

I don’t mind it at all! In fact, I LOVE IT! It usually starts with them asking me weight loss questions like, if I have done P90X or INSANITY. But quickly turns to if they have and what their experience with the program was. Some people share amazing success stories with me. How they have not only lost weight, but totally changed their lives because of taking a chance on an infomercial.

They usually go on to tell me how their results have now sparked friends, family members, or co-workers into starting the program themselves. The joy in their eyes of impacting others because of their own hard work is amazing. Many of these people actually end up joining my Team to learn how to more effectively reach out to their community to help End the Trend of obesity.

Others have either tried one of Beachbody’s programs, or bought it and never started. As I ask them why, and they share their experience, I noticed the same type of weight loss questions continue to pop up.

How did I start when I was 100 pounds heavier?

What program did I start with?

How did I change my routine?

What supplements do I use?

How do I stay motivated?

So I thought I would invite YOU to run a few errands with me! Or at least be able to pick my brain the same way the nice teller at the bank did the other day.

Feel free to ask me about my experience with Beachbody and my 100-pound weight loss. You ask, I answer. Instead of answering your weight loss questions directly in the comment section, I will pick a few questions at a time to tackle in articles in the coming weeks. You game?

Leave your weight loss questions in the comment section. I look forward to lending you a helping hand! – Coach Jimmy

Get Over Yourself – Your Health and Fitness is NOT About YOU

By Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

What's your weight loss inspiration? Is it bigger than you?

I have noticed a trend lately when interacting with people on the subject of improving their health and fitness. For many, they truly know there is a need for a change in their life. And most have an honest desire to be something greater than they currently are. It’s not a lack of knowing what to do.

After speaking with me they hear our clients’ testimonials, they know the products, programs, and support in our Challenge Groups really do work! Yet, there is something inside that keeps them from taking that first step outside their comfort zone to get started. It usually stems from some sort of fear. A fear of starting. A fear of failing. And for some, actually, the fear of success and the change it would bring into the life they currently know.

I was in Orlando last weekend talking with a friend of a friend. This guy just finished medical school and managed to find some extra weight along the way. He shared with me how he started P90X because a buddy of his was also doing it. But he didn’t feel like he was totally committed to it or if he could complete the whole program. So I asked him why he started in the first place. What was his goal in tackling P90X? He said he thought it would be something positive to pursue now that he finished medical school, and that he would like to lose an extra 15-20 pounds.

Most people would have stopped there and thought that was a good solid goal.… Not Coach Jimmy!

I told him I thought that was admirable. But then I asked a follow up question:

“What would be different in your world if you actually lost that 15-20 pounds?”

He stopped dead in his tracks and thought about it for a little while. As he continued to share it became obvious very quickly that his wanting to lose 20 pounds wasn’t about him at all! He was concerned for the health of his aging parents! He said if he could do something positive and see some real results, maybe they would be inspired to take some small step towards improving their health. Even if that was just going for an evening walk, or replacing one meal a day with something like Shakeology.

He said he never really thought about it before. But now that I asked, his desire to improve his health stemmed from wanting to encourage his parents to do the same so they would be around to see him start a family.

WOW! That’s a much deeper motivation than just wanting to drop a few pounds before swimsuit season!

I was also reminded of a story of a close friend of mine who saw an enormous life changing body transformation. He lost over 120 pounds using P90X. And had gained lots of attention for doing so. Most people congratulated him on the fact that he ‘decided to do it for himself’. What they don’t know was that the thing that got him to put down the beer and pizza and get off his couch had NOTHING to do with him at all!

It was all about needing to get in shape to help a family member who needed an organ transplant. But my friend was too fat to be considered an eligible donor!

I look at my own weight loss journey as an example. I remember being 100 pounds heavier coming out of a very emotional break up. Stepping out of the shower one day and catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror and thinking: ‘Who in the world is going to love this?!’

I knew I was called to do great things with my life. I knew I wanted to have a family. And I also knew that I wasn’t going to be able to be the husband, dad, family member, and friend I needed to be in my current state. Not just because I was heavier, but because I wasn’t taking care of the body, mind, talents, or tools God had equipped me with to impact others!

We just celebrated my son, Asher’s, first birthday. As I was surrounded in a room full of family and friends, I looked at my wife and son and took a minute to thank God for giving something besides my dire situation to focus on. I could have very easily felt sorry for myself. Blamed others for the miserable situation I found myself in. And continued a downward spiral of depression years ago. But He gave me something outside of myself to focus on and my life became a miracle that I now get to pass along to help others.

If you are that person who feels stuck, hopeless, and in despair – then I want to help you! You are not alone in this journey!

Fitness Support – Are Your Friends Keeping You Fat

By Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson

“Birds of a Feather, Flock Together”

Who doesn’t remember their mother quoting this phrase dozens of times during our adolescent years? Usually it was in reference to some friend of mine at school that she didn’t quite approve of. But, as I have gotten older I realize that it really applies to all areas of life … yes, even in your waistline!

I look back on areas of my life when I was 100 pounds heavier. A college dropout, moving back in with my parents in my mid 20’s with two maxed out credit cards. Working at a bar and completely giving up on my dreams. It was very easy to blame outside circumstances on my situation. But I looked back on those times and who I chose to spend most of my time with; What were their habits, income, fitness levels or mindsets? No wonder I was struggling!!!

Most of my ‘friends’ had no long term dreams or goals they were working toward on a daily basis. None of them pushed me out of my comfort zone to strive to be something more than I was. It was mostly about how we were going to endure another day. And where the party was that night. My daily routine consisted of late nights of drinking followed by 2 am visits to Denny’s. And my only physical activity was being on my feet waiting tables. No wonder I hated the summer time pool season!

Thank goodness I had a friend that introduced me to Power 90, an in-home workout series that came with an amazing support community. The program was great, but the community of support and accountability that came with it is what played a huge role in changing my world.

“As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

The amazingly supportive online community were people trying to improve themselves on a daily basis! Many of them were much further along in their fitness journey than I was, yet were not satisfied to rest on the results they had seen.

That was 10 years ago! And I am still friends with many of those people that I met when I started Power 90. But the crazy thing is my constant self improvement has grown far beyond waist or bicep size. It has become constantly growing as an overall person in fitness, business, marriage, spirituality, and parenthood.

During the past two weeks, I have had the privilege of being around some of these extraordinary people. A small group of us met in South Florida for Tommy & Ashley Mygrant’s wedding. Tommy has lost over 100 pounds. Impacts thousands on his speaking circuit. And runs a very successful business as a fellow Beachbody Coach. I was joined by other top Beachbody Coaches as well. The late night talks by the pool and our group workouts were an amazing time of growth for all of us, as we shared experiences, habits, successes, and failures.

Then this past weekend, a larger group of us attended a seminar where we were pushed in all areas of our life. I came away from these experiences realizing that no matter how successful we think someone is, there are areas of their lives they are trying to improve as well. No one has it all figured out!

This brings me back to your health, fitness, and that ever growing waistline! What example is being set for you by the people you surround yourself with? I’ve heard a stat many times that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. That includes finances, mindset, outlook on the future, and YES, YOUR HEALTH!

At my heaviest weight, and lowest areas of my life, I would have loved to have someone speaking life and encouragement into me. But I didn’t seem to know where to find that. Thank God that I got plugged into a virtual family that accepted me in my current state. Encouraged me on good days and bad days. And saw more in me than I saw in myself!

Does that describe you? Do you have that small, desperate voice inside you that screams out “I know I am so much more than this”?

Have you given up on goals and dreams because of your current physical condition? (I know being 100 pounds overweight squashed my dream of pursuing my acting career)

If this is you, take comfort in knowing you are not alone! You can improve your health, reclaim those goals, and live the life you deserve! I have been where you are. I know it’s possible! And I am here to help!

I’d love to connect with you via my Facebook or Twitter account! I’d love to hear your story, find out your dreams and goals and then devise a plan to get you started on the path towards success!

In this together! YOUR Success Story is MY Mission! – Coach Jimmy

The journey to the neXt frontier as begun! The anxiously awaited sequel to the best selling in-home fitness program, P90X2, arrived at my house in time to make it a very Merry Christmas!

After 8 years of doing P90X, and having the privilege of working out personally with creator Tony Horton on many occasions, I was excited to see how this new version differed from the original.

All I can say is, if the first 4 weeks of Phase 1 set the tone for the next 60 days, then this truly is the cutting edge of fitness and I cannot wait to see my full 90 day results!

The workouts in Phase 1 of P90X2 are:

· X2 Core

· Plyocide

· Recovery and Mobility

· Balance and Power

· X2 Yoga

· Total Body

· Ab Ripper X2

As opposed to the original, P90X2 does not ask you to crank out pushups and pull-ups like a Navy S.E.A.L. on Day 1. Instead, this entire phase is a real baseline to prepare you for what’s to come. Every workout in Phase 1 stress the importance of 2 things:

Core Strength & Balance

I can tell you, me and the other people in my current Challenge Group, are quickly finding out that it doesn’t matter how much weight you can curl or how many pushups you can do – this Phase of P90X2 has humbling way of showing you were you are lacking in your overall functional fitness. For most of us, and most people in general, the area of true core strength (not just pretty abs) and balance have been a weakness because we have ignored training specifically with those areas in mind.

I was quickly reminded of my very first round of P90X. Back then there were no infomercial success stories, or 1000 YouTube videos to look up for How-To’s. My wife and I got up every morning at 6am and struggled our way through it and figured it out on our own ‘Trial and Error’ style. There was LOTS of failing, falling, and frustration. But we continued to show up every day and got better. The same is true with Phase 1 of P90X2. Using a big bouncy stability ball, smaller medicine balls, and a crazy looking foam roller introduced new ways to fail and fall! But each time you revisit the workouts you get better and better. Instead of being excited that I upped my weight on a Congdon Curl, I’m stoked that I was able to 15 Sphinx to Planks on a stability ball.

And for those of you who are fans of the results the resistance training and old school weight lifting brought you in P90X, don’t you worry. As I start Phase 2, I was quickly reminded that Tony Horton still likes to lift weights. The difference is now you are forced to engage your newfound core strength and balance skills WHILE doing those Wide Curls and Decline Pushups.

The new nutrition guide is also much easier to use and has varied plans for any personal diet plan including: Vegetarian, Vegan, and Paleo!

This is an extreme program, and like with any program diet along with supplementation is extremely important. If you are asking a lot from your body by training it like an athlete, wouldn’t you want to give it the tools it needs to perform, recovery and repair like an athlete as well.

I am often asked what supplements I use, so I thought I would list exactly what I am taking through my P90X2 journey. Links below will give you more information on each of them!

·

One month into P90X2, me and my fellow Challenge Group participants, are seeing amazing results. I’m excited to see what the next 60 days bring.

2012: Year of Resolutions or Results?

So we find ourselves once again in that weird holiday lull period between Christmas and New Years. For me, it’s always this odd feeling of trying to look forward and backward at the same time. Another year is coming to a close and we reflect both positively and negatively on the past 12 months. We see the goals we set at the beginning of the year; some that we achieved and perhaps we have fallen short of others…again.

In the midst of this reflection and projection, the ‘R’ word starts getting thrown around a lot…

RESOLUTIONS

Not that there is anything wrong with resolutions. I think setting specific concrete goals with a time line to complete them is the cornerstone of many successful people. But what is it about this time of the year that we convince ourselves ‘this time we are serious’? Or why do so many people put off taking action on their goals until the 1st. Like January is some magical month where all the hassles and unpredictability of life will just stop so all our hopes and wishes can come true with the wave of a wand.

Regardless, we all do it. December 26-31 should be labeled as ‘Resolution Week’.

I saw a statistic that said weight loss is traditionally the number one resolution on people’s lists; however over 68 percent of resolutions to lose weight or eat better are broken within three months and 85
percent are broken by the end of the year. This may sound like a lot of people without willpower. Instead, it may just be a matter of poor planning.

So is this going to be another year of making a resolution, crossing your fingers, and hoping that it isn’t forgotten by March? OR is this the year you change your ‘R’ word from Resolution to…..

RESULTS

Honestly, at the end of the day success is measured in one thing and one thing only: did you get results? It is that way in school, at work, in sports…you name it. Almost all areas of life are results driven with success versus failure.

So if you are serious about changing your weight loss and fitness “R”esolution into real measurable “R”esults, shouldn’t you have a plan that is guaranteed to work?

“Whoa Jimmy! Guaranteed to work??? Nothing in life is guaranteed!”

WRONG!!!

I work in Results! Maybe you are like I was when I was 100 pounds heavier. Living in a state of “I wish I could lose weight”, or “I hope this is the year I live a healthier life”, but you aren’t quite sure if you can do it or even where to start. Does that sound familiar?

Would you like a simple “Guaranteed Fitness Plan in a Box”? Where all the guesswork of what to do and how to do it is taken away, and all you are left with are the guaranteed results you have been wishing/hoping for?

Then I invite you to be part of my 2012 Challenge Group. It’s a simple equation: FITNESS + NUTRITION + SUPPORT = SUCCESS

Due to the high demand I have opened up another January group. This Challenge Group will be limited to a select group of people that are tired of hype, ready for results and serious about partnering with me to take action. If that is you, I invite you to LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW, and our staff will get back to you ASAP with all the details. Here’s to your Real Results in 2012. In this together! Coach Jimmy – “Your Success Story is My Mission!”

It’s that time of year again. The time of year between mid November and January 2nd where the cakes, candies, parties, cocktails, and “legit” excuses to splurge on your meal plan seem to come fast and furiously!

As I started to look at my upcoming schedule, it seems like I could ‘justify’ four to five splurges in a week for the next month and a half! Between an actual holiday, a party, or relatives visiting, it can be pretty destructive for those of us trying to eat clean and healthy on a regular basis!

But you know what? THAT’S LIFE! And there may be stretches of time when we all aren’t as consistent as we would like to be with our nutrition and exercise plan! So what do you do when one bad meal becomes a five day buffet of treats…….

YOU BOUNCE BACK!

My fitness journey of losing 100 pounds and keeping it off started over 10 years ago. I was recently asked, “Was there a moment when you decided ‘That’s it, I’m eating clean the rest of my life’”?

The simple answer is…. NO!!!

If I had a nickel for every time I slipped up, fell off the wagon, or overindulged, I would be a VERY rich man!

So what makes me different than the majority of people who start a healthy living plan, fall off, get frustrated with themselves and give up? My ability to bounce back fast!

See, most people start off their plan well-intentioned, then they hit some road bump (usually brought on by family or friends …. isn’t that helpful?!?!!). Instead of just getting up, dusting themselves off, and getting back to the plan, they waste the time and energy feeling badly about their choices.

Wanna know a secret? It takes the same amount of effort and energy to feel guilty and beat yourself up as it does to bounce back!

One path sends you into a downward spiral that takes four times the energy to be pulled out of; the other path gets you back on the road toward your goals and literally erases the bad mental feelings from that holiday splurge!

This can sometimes be difficult to do on your own. But within a support group, it is much easier to get on track! I have been blessed to surround myself with a supportive community since my weight loss and fitness journey began. I realized very early on that without a support system, I would fall victim to the ‘guilt trap’ as well. So I constantly surround myself with people that have similar goals, who won’t judge me when I fall, and are always there in my time of need.

I encourage you to surround yourself with a support community! You are worth it! The goals you have for yourself depend on it!

Maybe you are in a situation where your family, friends, and co-workers don’t share your goals and desires. I would love to help you plug into your very own support team!

I’m currently putting together Challenge groups. I put people together with others like themselves who are ready to stop wishing for change, and who will actually lock arms with a team and take action. If that is you, I invite you to visit my Challenge Page by CLICKING HERE, and we will take the first action step to reaching your goals…. TOGETHER!

So it is finally upon us, Thanksgiving! The holiday that is the most closely identified with food! (And usually LOTS of it!)

So for those of us making a real effort to eat healthy, or are in the middle of a fitness program; what do we do? Should we shun the chance to spend time with those we love by locking ourselves in a room with nothing but baked chicken and steamed green beans? Do we bring our own food to Thanksgiving dinner, and run the risk of having to explain over and over to every distant relative that ‘No, I didn’t join a cult – I’m just watching what I eat’. Only to have them roll their eyes or give us a hard time about it?

Both are actually viable options, but I personally don’t follow either.

Here are a few steps I follow every Thanksgiving to enjoy celebrating a holiday with my family, but also not completely sabotaging all the hard work I have put in to reach my health and fitness goals.

- Since Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, I make an extra effort to eat as clean as possible the rest of the week leading up to Turkey Day.

- I make sure to get in a really great workout on Thanksgiving morning. That could be going for a run, grabbing a yoga Class, or popping in an INSANITY DVD.

- I eat small healthy meals leading up to the big Thanksgiving family dinner. This keeps you from over indulging because you have starved yourself all day.

- This may sound silly. But if you have an option on the size of plate you use to serve yourself, pick the smaller plate. I always feel more full by eating everything packed onto a small plate, than trying to limit myself on a large plate or platter. (You will also get fewer comments from your ‘loving’ family asking why you don’t have more on your plate.)

- Regardless what Aunt Edna says, you DON’T have to try one of everything that is offered. I usually pick one or two splurge items I know I want to enjoy, serve myself a small serving of each, then surround the rest of my plate with white turkey meat and vegetables.

- Dessert. Yep, I enjoy dessert. Again I look at all my options and pick the one I know I want the most. I cut myself a small piece and enjoy.

- Speaking of enjoy. ENJOY your food. Take your time. I have even been known to physically put my fork down between bites to make myself take more time to eat. By doing this you will savor your well earned splurge, and you will be much less likely to travel back for seconds ….. or thirds.

- And last, but not least. Just because your family cooked more food than everyone could eat, does NOT mean it’s your responsibility to take left overs home. Make this a Holi-DAY not a Holi-WEEK.

That’s about it. I hope you find these tips helpful.

We all have so much to be thankful for this time of year, no reason not to allow yourself a little day of indulgence. And IF you happen to go a little overboard, don’t beat yourself up! Just know that Friday is a new day, and you can be back on your normal routine as soon as you choose to be!
