How to Find the Right Workout Program – What is Your Fitness DNA

As some of you may know, I have a twin sister. We may look alike (we’re identical, but don’t look exactly alike!), but our styles, tastes and personalities are like night and day! You could say we’re the sister version of opposites attract!!
Kasey’s very pregnant with baby #2; only a matter of days before they become a family of four. My Mom treated Kasey to “the calm before the storm” pedicure yesterday. After that, they did a little shopping. My Mom is a caregiver for my grandmother and she feels most comfortable wearing scrub type outfits while puttering around the house and looking after my Grandmother. So Mom and Kasey were shopping at the scrub store.
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during this adventure. As much as my sister and I are opposite, my Mom and my sis don’t see eye to eye when it comes to fashion. My sister suggested things that didn’t really look like traditional scrubs while my Mom loved the bright prints like you’d see the pediatric nurses wearing! So as much as my sister tried to help, my Mom just wasn’t feeling Kasey’s suggestions. She wanted to get what made HER feel comfortable and confident.
My sister (remember she’s EXTREMELY preggo and it’s summer in New Orleans!) was low on patience after a while and just stopped making suggestions. My Mom ended up getting the items that she liked and that made her happy and comfortable.
I share this story with you not so you’ll run out and pick out scrubs for yourself, but something hit me after I talked to my sister.
We are all different. No two people are alike – not even identical twins (we have the same DNA. The genotype – the DNA – is the same, but the phenotype – the way the genes are expressed – is different)! And what one person falls in love with may be completely wrong for another. The point is that we’re all different!
This brings me to health and fitness. As I was driving home from errands after talking with my sister, my mind was going 100 miles an hour! We all have our go-to items that make us feel great, whether it’s the amazing shoes that you just bought or comfy PJs that are ancient or the one item that always ends up in your grocery cart. Workouts are the same way.
There’s reasons why people don’t stick to the latest fad diets and workouts.
- The fad diets are bogus and you’ll end up weighing more than you started (but that’s a topic for a different day!!)
- That type of workout or nutrition plan may not speak to you.
Now hold on a second because I hear the comebacks in my head already…”Well, Kelly, a #3 with a jumbo soda and fries is what speaks to me. I guess I should just eat that?!” Let me break something to you. There comes a point in time where you have to be a grown up and realize that the reason this nation has an obesity EPIDEMIC is because of the #3, jumbo soda and fries. There comes a point in time where you have to sever ties to your beloved #3 and take control of YOU.
You want to be around longer for your kids? You want to lose weight and have more energy? You want to fit into that dress that you bought 5 years ago as a “motivation dress” but your motivation went the other way (yes, I know, we all have those)? Only YOU can change that. So…when you’re ready to accept responsibility and when you’re ready to change YOU, we have a solution. Actually, we have SOLUTIONS!!!
One of the reasons I love being a Beachbody coach is that Beachbody’s created such a vast library of workout programs. Sure, we sell lots of P90X, Insanity and Turbo Fire, but what about the person who’s just getting started? Or what about the person who has bad knees and needs to modify moves? Or what about the person who just likes to dance, or the person who has zero coordination, or an older person who just needs to stay active? Have no fear, we literally have something for everyone – young, old, beginner, intermediate, advanced…even for pregnant mommys-to-be!
And these other programs aren’t just the type of workout DVD that you’d find on the shelves at Best Buy or Walmart. The same blood, sweat and tears goes into the development and trial of every Beachbody workout program. There are test groups done beforehand so they get it just right. There are workout schedules for each program that will give you the best results for that type of workout (you shouldn’t expect Insanity type results when doing Tai Cheng!). And there are meal plans that are specifically designed to meet the needs of your body during that program.
